QUICKLAUNCH GUIDE FOR CURRENT STUDENTS
Campus Internet Access
All students living in the residence halls have ethernet connections available in their rooms. All adjacent apartment buildings have direct network connections like in the residence halls. Outlying apartment buildings have wireless connections or are provided other means of internet access. Students have full and complete internet access for email, 网络, 闲谈，聊天, and other 网络-based services and software. Secure wireless access exists in the residence halls and academic buildings.
Campus Computer Labs for Students
Two computer labs are available to students in the 施万库. Additional curricular labs throughout campus include the music lab in the Center for Arts and Performance, math and computer science labs in Generac Hall, and a number of laptop carts for on-demand instructional computing. Although both resident and commuting students have access to these labs, most students prefer to have their own computer to accommodate their personal study habits.
Microsoft Office 365 is available free to students and contains Word, Excel, 演示文稿, 团队, 和OneNote.
To install, follow these steps:
- http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/education/products/office
- Enter your WLC email address (firstname.lastname@mail.bj7dian.com) in the box that says Get started with Office 365 for free 并点击 开始.
- Select 我是一个学生.
- Sign in using your WLC email and password. If you have not set up an account, you may need to enter your birthday. You can choose skip if it prompts you to invite others. Once you have successfully registered, wait a few minutes to allow time for your account to sync with Microsoft.
- At the Office 365 page, click 安装办公室 toward the top right of the page and choose Office 365应用程序.
- Open the downloaded file 并点击 运行. If a security box opens asking if you want to give permission to run the program, click 是的.
- The Microsoft Office Installation page will open. Additional prompts will help you install Microsoft Office on your device.
- You can install Office 365 on up to five devices including mobile (iPads, tablets, and smart phones).
Mobile printing allows you to print on campus from a personal computer or device.
- Compose an email from your WLC email account to mobileprint@bj7dian.com.
- Attach your document (PDF format preferred).
- Swipe your 战士收费 at a WLC printer.
- Select document and press options to set: Duplex (print double sided); Color or B/W
- 按打印.
Availability of software in certain disciplines often determines what kind of computer will best meet a student's needs. Most academic programs at WLC use Windows-based PCs. However, 美术 and Music majors tend to use Mac computers. 威斯康辛州路德 College fully supports both environments.
We recommend that you stay away from Chromebooks. They do not necessarily support Microsoft Office 365, which is required and provided free through WLC, and are not compatible with some of the additional software you might need to use while on campus.
For students interested in pursuing nursing, Chromebooks, iPads, and tablets are not compatible with software that is required in nursing classes.
Typically, most new computers have sufficient power and storage for college students.
We suggest the following considerations as you explore options:
- 硬盘: Solid State Drives (SSD) are faster and are quickly replacing the standard hard drive.
- MINIMUM recommended size for a hard drive is 128GB. Anything less than that and you risk running out of space for storage and to run updates (Windows needs 8GB free for updates).
- The typical hard drive now is a 250GB SSD, though some people prefer 500GB to 1TB depending on how many photo and video files you plan to save.
- If you purchase a 250GB SSD, you can always save files to online applications (OneDrive, Dropbox, 谷歌驱动, 等.) or external hard drives for additional storage.
- 内存: 4GB to 16GB; 8GB is the standard; you can add more RAM later on most models.
- MICROSOFT OFFICE 365: Microsoft Office is standard across most platforms and runs on all Windows and iOS enabled devices. As long as you are enrolled at WLC, you can take advantage of up to five free downloads of Microsoft Office for your personal devices. This includes the newest version of Word, Excel, 演示文稿, 等., and is part of your WLC email account, which is on Office 365.
- Wireless access and Bluetooth are standard in all laptops. Windows 10 is standard as well.
- 配件: Students must supply their own network cables to connect to ethernet. We recommend that students have a surge protector on all computers used in campus housing. Inexpensive surge protectors ($20-$30) are available at most retail stores. For greater protection, consider purchasing an APC Back-UPS unit (starting at approximately $50).
Getting Messages On Campus
- Dial 8888 from your phone.
- Enter your passcode when prompted.
- A message will play telling you what unplayed or played messages you have.
- When you are done, press 9 to exit.

- Dial your phone number.
- When your voicemail picks up, press * and your passcode.
- A message will play telling you what unplayed or played messages you have.

Activating Your Voicemail Mailbox For the First Time
- From you own phone, dial 8888.
- Enter the temporary passcode that has been given to you.

WLC email accounts, called 战士的邮件, are provided for all 威斯康辛州路德 College students. Students must check their college email regularly. Failure to check one's email account does not excuse the lack of knowledge regarding information in the email.
